Sarah Portlock
Sarah Portlock is a multimedia journalist with interests in photography, the environment, architecture and design, and extreme weather.
She is currently finishing her masters degree in digital media from Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism. This summer, she has an internship with the Associated Press in Houston. Previously, she has covered breaking news for Newsday; hyperlocal news in Brooklyn; and courts, crime, and city politics for the now-defunct New York Sun. She graduated from New York University in 2007, where she was editor-in-chief of its daily student newspaper, the Washington Square News.
Sarah grew up in rural Virginia and is inspired and fascinated by the places where concrete and nature can — and awkwardly do — coexist. At Columbia, she has pursued photography and multimedia techniques as a way to tell these stories, including her digital masters thesis, Characters of Gowanus.
